Student Stories
Ahren, who came up through a tumultuous environment, had recently gotten in trouble for fighting, when tragedy struck, and a difficult situation got worse.
“When my grandma died, I didn’t want to go to school. I was just depressed,” Ahren reflects.
Knowing she needed a change, Ahren found her way to Commonwealth, where she found more than just a school; she found a sanctuary where she could thrive without the distractions of her past.
"It’s different. It’s chill here," she remarks, contrasting it with her previous experiences. Despite initially feeling uncertain, Ahren found her footing thanks to her family and the understanding community at her new school. “It’s peaceful. Not a lot of people,” she continues, as she emphasizes the calming nature of her newfound haven. Ahren describes the transition as seamless, noting how she was able to dive headfirst into her coursework without delay. “I came right in, did what I had to do,” she says confidently before emphasizing, “it was easy.”
Drawing on her passion for beauty and inspiration from her uncle who is currently in barber school, Ahren dreams of attending college to pursue a career in cosmetology. "I want to do a lot. I don’t know what exactly, but I like doing hair," she exclaims, her eyes shining with purpose.
Though she’s only a sophomore, Ahren is determined to progress through her courses and finish strong. "I’m trying to graduate early...I want to be done next week!" she laughs, eager to embark on the next chapter of her life.
Ahren’s story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of second chances. |
